Nutritionist says 'healthy' foods could be behind your weight gain

A nutritionist has warned that some of the foods people rely on most for a “healthy” diet could actually be contributing to weight gain - particularly for those with underlying intolerances. As more people focus on clean eating, high-protein snacks and plant-based options, experts say certain foods may be doing more harm than good for digestion and metabolism. In some cases, this can lead to bloating, inflammation and difficulty losing weight. Oliver Goble, nutritionist at Supply Life , said the issue is not the foods themselves but how individuals respond to them.
He explained that intolerance or sensitivity can disrupt digestion and impact how the body processes nutrients. “People often assume that if a food is considered healthy it will automatically support weight loss,” he said. “But if your body isn’t tolerating it well it can lead to inflammation, water retention and digestive issues that may contribute to weight gain.” Eggs at breakfast Eggs are widely seen as a high-protein, nutritious way to start the day, but Oliver said they can be problematic for some people. He explained that sensitivities to egg whites in particular can trigger low-level inflammation in certain people. He said: “If someone has an intolerance, even mild, it can lead to symptoms like bloating or discomfort. Over time this can affect digestion and make it harder for the body to function optimally.” Vegan protein bars Plant-based protein bars are often marketed as a clean alternative, but Oliver said ingredients like pea protein can cause digestive issues for some people.
He explained that highly processed protein sources can be difficult to break down, particularly in large amounts. He said: “These products are often seen as a convenient health food but they can be quite heavy on the digestive system. This can lead to bloating and discomfort, which some people may mistake for weight gain.” Oats and ‘healthy’ porridge Oats are often seen as one of the healthiest breakfast options but Oliver said they can cause issues for some people, particularly when eaten daily. He explained that certain people may struggle to tolerate compounds found in oats or react to the high fibre load. “For some people, oats can lead to bloating, sluggish digestion or discomfort, especially if gut health is already compromised,” he said. “While they can be beneficial for many it’s important to notice how your body responds rather than assuming they are universally suitable.” Oliver said the key issue is that people often overlook how their body responds to certain foods.
What works well for one person may not be suitable for another, particularly when it comes to digestion and gut health. “The goal isn’t to cut out foods unnecessarily but to pay attention to how your body reacts,” he said. “Identifying and adjusting foods that cause discomfort can help improve digestion, energy levels and overall health.”
