David Njoku sends warning to NFL after signing with Chargers

On paper, tight end David Njoku will be playing with the most talented quarterback of his pro career in Justin Herbert after Njoku inked a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers earlier in May. While speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Njoku sent somewhat of a warning to the rest of the NFL regarding what the 2026 Chargers could accomplish. Will David Njoku make the Chargers offense a destructive force in 2026? "I feel like we can be destructive," Njoku said about the Chargers, per Omar Navarro of the club's website.
"We got the tools, we got the keys, we got the players to do it all. It's up to us to put it all together." This past winter, the Chargers hired former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel as their new offensive coordinator shortly after Herbert fell to 0-3 as a postseason starter via a 16-3 wild-card loss at the New England Patriots. Presumably, adding Njoku to the mix will allow McDaniel to use tight end and fellow free-agency acquisition Charlie Kolar as both a blocker and a pass-catcher. "I do what I'm asked to do, even more so in ways I feel like I can help," Njoku said about joining the Chargers.
"I try to give as much of my knowledge to the other tight ends, but I try to the best I can do to help everybody." Why David Njoku felt the Chargers were the right fit for him A one-time Pro Bowl selection, Njoku lost the Cleveland Browns' TE1 job to 2025 third-round draft pick Harold Fannin Jr. last season. Over the final 12 games of his Cleveland tenure, Njoku recorded 33 receptions for 293 yards and four touchdowns. On Tuesday, Njoku explained why he felt the Chargers were "the best fit" for him after he spent the first nine campaigns of his pro career with Cleveland. "More so just finding the perfect fit that I thought would be for personally," Njoku said.
"The best spot I could be successful in. When I visited here, I really enjoyed it. I met with the coaches, the owners, everything. For starters, we have a great quarterback here.
Mike McDaniel is good, the head coach, [Jim Harbaugh]. It was really a cumulative of things that made me decide to come here." Perhaps having Njoku as a weapon will help Herbert notch what's become an elusive first career playoff win in January 2027.
