Longtime Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had mixed feelings when asked about the team drafting former Penn State quarterback Drew Allar in the third round, especially with Aaron Rodgers still very much on the team. “This is one I’m not sure yet if I love it or hate it,” Roethlisberger said on his podcast. “I don’t think this was done because they know anything about Aaron. It wasn’t like, ‘Okay, we know Aaron’s not coming,’ so we’re doing this, I think it was a ‘We liked a big physical quarterback." Big Ben admitted he doesn't "watch a lot of Penn State games," but when he did, Allar "never really jumped off the tape." I think this will push Will," Roethlisberger said.
"When I watch tape or if I watch games, Will Howard jumped off the tape to me more than Drew did." There may be a reason for that, though. Longtime Penn State assistant Terry Smith, who took over as interim coach when James Franklin was fired, admitted that the Nittany Lions offense wasn't suited for Allar's ability to get the ball down the field. "I think, unfairly to Drew, our system wasn't built for him," Smith said. "It wasn't made for him.
Some of the decisions were taken out of his control. He's a guy that can make every throw. He's super smart. He's a fast learner.
He picks things up really quickly. I just think, with the right coaching, the right direction ..." Allar now joins a team led by the quarterback-friendly offense of Mike McCarthy. More NFL: Steelers Make ‘Rare’ Decision on Quarterback Aaron Rodgers
