Tiger Woods made his first public appearance since his March DUI arrest at the PGA Tour press conference. The golf icon introduced PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp during the conference as well as sharing his opinions on the new competitive model. “It was about bringing together different perspectives, having honest, hard conversations, and thinking boldly about what is best for the game that we all love,” Woods said. “It has been a privilege to work with all the committee members and especially my fellow player directors. I’m proud of the work we’ve done and am grateful to everyone who’s contributed along the way. The five-time Masters champion added, “We have to look forward and beyond today and over the horizon to set up the PGA Tour and our sport for the future generations of players and fans.” The new structure will feature a two-tier system: PGA Tour Championship Series and the developmental PGA Tour Challenger Series.
According to the official PGA website, the Challenger Series will be played concurrently with the PGA TOUR Championship Series and will feature fields of approximately 144 players. Each tournament “will be played across 72 holes with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties.” There will also be an ability to reduce field sizes in this new model to accommodate restrictions like daylight. The Challenger Series will be played during PGA TOUR Championship Series off weeks. It is set to launch in 2028.
Rolapp praised Woods’ appearance at the press conference sharing that his expertise is more than appreciated. “I think having Tiger involved was a tremendous asset and a privilege,” Rolapp said. “His insight into the game as a player but also being around it his whole life, the respect he has earned from fans, from his fellow members, from partners is invaluable. So, his leadership has been tremendous. We’re fortunate to have him.” “It’s great to see him back,” Rolapp continued. “Tiger’s been involved throughout the process, has contributed meaningfully. It’s awesome to see him back in great form, so we’re really excited about it.” Woods’ appearance follows his March DUI arrest in Florida where he was later charged with property damage, refusal to submit to a lawful test, and was later cited for careless driving.
He pleaded not guilty to all of the charges on March 31. He reportedly went to a rehabilitation center in Zurich, Switzerland following the crash and completed the program this month, according to TMZ. The golf icon shared on social media that it was his next steps following the rollover crash. “I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today,” he wrote in a statement via X back in March. “I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.” “I’ve committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally,” he continued. “I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.” Woods will reportedly be back in court on June 2.
