The Government is making the Ryder Cup a key target as it sets out a programme aimed at bringing more blue-chip sporting events to the United Kingdom . Alongside the bid to host golf's most prestigious team event, initial work has also started on a mission to bring the Olympics back to the country for the first time since London staged such a successful Games in 2012. The Ryder Cup will be held at Adare Manor in Ireland in 2027 and at Camiral Golf and Wellness resort in Spain in 2031 but the Government wants it staged in the UK in the 2030s, most likely in 2035. Several courses - including Hulton Park in Bolton - are already in the running for 2035.
The Ryder Cup was last played in England, at The Belfry, in 2002. It was played at Gleneagles in Scotland in 2014 and Celtic Manor in Wales in 2010.
The Government will also encourage a bid for the Solheim Cup. The Olympic Games will be staged in Los Angeles in 2028 and in Brisbane in 2032.
The Government would like the Olympic and Paralympic Games to be hosted here in the 2040s. The UK is already the sole bidder for the 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup. As part of its initiative to stage more global showpiece events, the Government will look to make it a criminal offence to resell tickets for specific major sporting events without authorisation, starting with UEFA Euro 2028. Speaking exclusively to Mirror Sport, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: “Hosting these events well isn’t just about the big stages, it’s about fairness for fans too.
People should be able to enjoy these occasions without being ripped off by ticket touts. That is why we are banning the unauthorised resale of tickets for these events, so that only official channels can sell tickets to fans." And Nandy insists the Government is determined to reinforce the UK’s reputation as a reliable, world-class host of the biggest sporting events. She added: “We know that major sporting events have the power to bring our communities together unlike anything else. That’s why this Government is making it easier for us to host and deliver some of the greatest sporting events in the world , here in the UK. “ These events don’t just create great memories - they support jobs, leave behind world-class facilities, and can inspire a generation of girls and boys to pursue their dreams. “This summer alone, fans can look forward to the Women's T20 World Cup and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Next year, we’ll see the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes Grands Départs bring world-class cycling to Great Britain, before we host the EUROs in 2028. "On the horizon, a successful 2035 FIFA Women's World Cup bid could be a landmark moment. With potential Olympic, Paralympic and Ryder Cup bids also in our sights, the future of major sport in this country has never looked more exciting.” Nandy says the Government is pledging £400million to grassroots sport alongside £500million invested in the delivery of major sporting events. There is already a bid in to host the World Athletics Championships in 2029.
