Five local Vernon sports leaders recognized at Sport BC awards ceremony Local volunteers recognized Five dedicated Vernon sports leaders have been honoured for their long-standing contributions to local athletics. Carson Dorward, Hashan Sirisena, Karen Deans, Marc Renairz, and Doug Ross were each presented with a Sport BC Community Sport Hero Award at a regional celebration on Monday, July 20. The event brought together volunteers, families, community leaders, and representatives from various Provincial Sport Organizations. “Volunteers are the backbone of sport in British Columbia,” said Rob Newman, President and CEO of Sport BC. “The Community Sport Hero Awards recognize the remarkable individuals who dedicate their time, energy, and expertise to creating positive sport experiences in communities across our province." The five local recipients were recognized for their work across a wide range of sports and organizations: Dorward has been a driving force with the Silver Star Freestyle Club, transforming opportunities for local athletes through officiating, executive leadership, and helping develop a world-class freestyle training facility in the Okanagan. Sirisena has played a pivotal role in expanding cricket across the B.C.

Interior, helping grow local leagues, build facilities, launch new regional tournaments, and create opportunities for players across the area. Deans has been a staple in the local figure skating community for more than 43 years, dedicating her time as an official, mentor, and volunteer leader supporting both young skaters and fellow officials. Renairz has spent nearly 20 years building sailing opportunities in the region through leadership, instruction, and mentorship, helping to expand local aquatic programs and inspire a new generation of sailors. Ross, representing KidSport Greater Vernon, has championed accessible sport for more than 40 years.

Leading the local KidSport chapter since 2022, Ross has helped more than 3,000 children overcome financial barriers to play organized sports.
