Know Your Parish The sport of Midget Racing Car Driving was witnessed for the very first time in the North-East region back in the month of May 1970, when the Midget Car Racing Club of Ireland staged a number of races on the grounds of St.
Clares at Stedalt, Stamullen to raise funds for St. Joseph`s Baby Home there. The Midget Car Racing got underway on May 3rd 1970 and it attracted hundreds of spectators from near and far who turned up to witness this thrilling spectacular event. The Midget Car Racing Club of Ireland returned the following year when; on Sunday June 20th 1971, another thrilling day of racing was getting underway.
The first Midget Car Race began just after lunch and at around 3.45pm or very soon afterwards, the seventh Race of the day began with seven Racing Drivers in the starting line-up. Dubliner, Trevor Gick, an experienced Racing Driver, was amongst the starting line-out; his car being that of No. 23 (pictured). After only a couple of laps of the short course, his Midget Racing Car could be seen to suddenly swerve as the driver of the car raced along the grass track at speed, running parallel with the Giblockstown Road, before it ploughed down a steep incline towards the Glassmerry River just inside the boundary hedge of the Giblockstown Road. Trevor Gick`s Car struck the large old tree (pictured),with force, which was close to the Glassmerry as hundreds of spectators looked on in horror.
Medics and an Ambulance crew attended to Mr. Gick and he was removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda; however, he was pronounced dead at the hospital soon afterwards. The old, dead, tree still stands eerily today, never producing any signs of life. It was also the last time that Midget Car Racing was ever staged at St.
Clares. The tragic death of Mr. Trevor Gick, the Midget Car Racing enthusiast of Butterfield Drive, Rathfarnham, Dublin, who was killed at Stedalt exactly 55 years ago this very month He was just 28-years-old.
